When gold was discovered in Kalgoorlie in the late 1890s, it wasn’t just men who went to seek a fortune. Women did, too, because in a town full of men, there was a certain case of supply and demand. At its peak, Hay Street was home to dozens of brothels and they were all busy. There is the tale of a Dutch prostitute who held the Hay Street record for seeing 72 clients in a 12-hour shift, making enough money to buy a house from one night’s work. These days there is still one brothel operating as a bordello museum.
